What I came to realize is that I hadn't eaten or tried, as it were, Life cereal since I was a kid. I couldn't peg how old I was but I wasn't very old. I was certainly still in elementary school, which was a time in my life when everything needed to be slathered in ketchup to be even remotely edible. That is when I started to think about it and I came to the conclusion that your taste buds change as time goes on and you grow up. So let's take a look at some of the things that I used to think were gross and that I now think are really good.
|This is public enemy #1 for kids.|
- Blueberry Yogurt Yogurt in general actually. I used to hate the stuff and I didn't know why. I remember my mom buying that fruit on the bottom of the cup stuff and it being like a punishment when I had to eat it. It was so gross. Now, I love the stuff. Especially the fruit on the bottom stuff. I don't know why, I don't know what changed, but now I am down with the yogurt. And more regular to boot.
- Meat Loaf I used to groan when we were having that for dinner. There had better be a lot of cheese and a lot of ketchup involved or I wasn't going to be any part of it. Now, I eat it any way it is presented to me: as part of a sandwich, on mashed potatoes with gravy, with ketchup and cheese, with ketchup and no cheese, you name it. And it is a delicious comfort food. So bring it on. I am all about it.
- Broccoli Broccoli gets a bad rap with kids. It is always presented on cartoons as being terrible, and cartoon kids are always feeding it to their dogs or being made to eat it before they can leave the table. I love broccoli. Besides being super healthy for you, it tastes pretty good too. And you can add it to all sorts of stuff. I even like it cold just plain, and it is super with a little ranch dressing (which I know offsets all the healthy benefits but simmer down, you are still getting all the broccoli goodness in there). So why didn't I like it as a young child? I am going to say that I was indoctrinated against it.
So that is my short list off the top of my head. I am sure that there are more things that I just don't remember. Do you have any foods that are that way for you? Leave a comment or drop an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org and let us know. We would love to hear.
